What is the number one clue to whether a dental office is the right one for you?
While there are a lot of factors that may influence your evaluation of a dental office, I would like to suggest that the most important deciding factor should be a dentist’s willingness to provide a risk-free in-person consultation about your needs—not in an exam chair, but in a consultation room before any exam takes place.

It’s your right to request a meeting with your healthcare provider before making a commitment to a treatment plan. Frankly, a dentist who cares about people (not just teeth) should be willing to sit down with you for a consultation prior to scheduling an exam so that he or she can get to know you as a person.
One patient of ours told me that our initial consultation changed his mind about dentistry. Kevin (not his real name) was extremely nervous about the idea of getting dental work, and he only agreed to come to our office if he could do so without getting into a dental chair right away. Our office manager, Julie, welcomed Kevin into our consultation room and talked with him about his concerns prior to my scheduled meeting with him. Julie then introduced me to Kevin, and I asked how I could help him. I will always remember his response: “You’ve already helped me. No one has ever sat down and talked to me like this and listened. I already feel like a giant load has been lifted.” Kevin decided to schedule an appointment for an exam so that we could create a treatment plan for the dental work he needed.
